Agra is located on the banks of river Yamuna between Mathura and Surajpur in the north Indian state, Uttar Pradesh. It is 203 km from New Delhi.

About Agra
Taj Mahal, AgraAgra is one of the most visited destinations of India and is known for its famous monument of love-Taj Mahal. The city came in to prominence during the reign of Sikander Lodi who made it the capital, later under the Mughals it became a great centre of art, culture and commerce. The city houses several monuments which display the splendour of Mughal architecture and attract tourists from all over world.
The city is also known for its large varieties of handicraft items such as Dhurries.

The climate of Agra is extreme. It is very hot in summer and cold in winter. During summer (April - July) maximum temperature rises up to 46 degrees C and in winter the temperature varies between 22 to 5 degrees C. The city gets heavy rainfalls in the monsoon season from July to September
The best time to visit is in winter i.e between December & January.

The historic city Agra has a wide range of spectacular monuments for tourists.
» Taj Mahal : Agra houses the most beautiful mausoleum of the world, the Taj Mahal, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. It was built by the Mughal emperor Saha Jahan as a memorial to his beloved wife Mumtaj.

Agra Fort» Agra Fort : This monument, an UNESCO World Heritage, is built of red sand stone and was built by three greatest Mughal emperors - Akbar, Jahangir and Sahajahan. The construction was started by Akbar in 1565 AD & was completed by others in 1571 AD. It has a total perimeter of 2.4 km and has four gates. The fort houses several palaces, gardens, mosques, courts, etc. The main attractions of the Fort include Diwan-i-am, Diwan-i-Khas, Musamman Burj and Jehangir's Palace.

» Jama Masjid : Built by Shah Jehan in 1648, dedicating it to his beloved daughter Jahanara the Masjid is another piece of Mughal Architectural excellence. The Masjid stands across the train tracks from the Delhi Gate of the Agra Fort.

» Jehangir's Palace : Built by Akbar for his son, Jehangir, this Palace assimilates both traditional Hindu and central Asian architectural styles .

» Itmad-ud-daulah's Tomb : Located on the bank of river Yamuna the mausoleum, Itmad-ud-daulah was built by Nur Jahan between 1622 & 1625 for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg. This white & beautifully carved tomb is a fine example of Islamic style of architecture.

Places to visit near Agra
» Sikandra Fort : It was named after Sikander Lodi and is at a distance of only 13 km from the Agra Fort. It houses the beautifully carved red sand stone tomb of Akbar lies in the centre of a vast garden. Akbar had started the construction but was completed by his son Jahangir in 1613.

» Akbar's Mausoleum : At a distance of 45 km in the northwestern direction stands this Mausoleum. The construction of the mausoleum was started by Akbar himself in accordance to his Deen -e-Illahi faith which, took into account the values of all religions. However, the monument was completed by Jehangir who had altered the style resulting in a cluttered architecture.

Temple in Mathura » The Hindu pilgrimage, Mathura : The birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura is a sacred place for the Hindus. The city holds an ancient world charm that enthralls the visitors. The main attractions of the City include Shri Krishna Janambhumi (the temple, Ranbhumi 9the wrestling spot where Krishna killed Kansa),Sati Burj, Kans Qila, Jama Masjid, Dwarkadheesh temple and the archaeological museum.

» Air : Agra airport is connected to all important cities of India. All the major domestic airlines operate their flights to the Agra Airport or the Kheria Airport.

» Rail : The city is well connected by trains to every parts of India. Agra is the main railway station and all the major trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi exp, Kalinga Utkal Exp. have their stoppage in Agra. Also one can visit the city by the luxury train "Palace on Wheels".

The Agra station falls in the important Delhi-Mumbai Broadgauge route.

» Road : It is well linked by good motor-able roads to other cities in and outside the state. Some major road distances are Delhi-204 km, Lucknow- 369km, Varanasi-605km, Mathura-54km and Nainital-353km.
